YMCA is a world wide voluntary movement started in 1844 for the spiritual,mental and physical development of young people without any discrimination of Class,caste,color and creed and to inculcate true Christian values and brotherhood among youth.It seeks to build a community of justice with love,peace and reconciliation. It adopts a holistic approach of developing mind,body and spirit.

The continuing basis of the work and witness of the Young Men’s Christian Association is expressed in the PARIS BASIS,adopted by the delegates of the First World Conference in Paris in 1855.

"The Young Men’s Christian Association seek those young men who regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Savior, according to the holy scripting desire to be this disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of this kingdom amongst young men."

The Ernakulam YMCA was started in 1939 when the erstwhile state of Cochin with a flourishing port and commercial centre was in developing stages. In those days Cochin was the only city in the state with sea, rail and road connections with other parts of the India. Hundreds of people were employed in the industrial units around Ernakulam town in the houses in British Cochin and in the Central Govt. Offices at Fort Cochin and Ernakulam.
